NZ Restricts Fossil Fuels to Combat Climate Change

11 October 2007 14:43

The New Zealand Government has outlined its long-term plans for energy generation and efficiency, including restrictions on fossil fuel generation to combat climate change.

The plans mean the government will not allow any fossil fuel burning power generators to be built in the country for the next ten years unless they are needed for emergency back-up.

Energy Minister David Parker says the strategy is in response to two challenges - to fight climate change emissions and secure clean and affordable energy, according to New Zealand press reports.

Parker suggests wind generation and geothermal power will be used instead of new hydro development.

Energy company Genesis Energy's gas-fired power station planned for Rodney near Auckland is also unlikely to go ahead, says the New Zealand Herald.
