Belarus to Build Nuclear Power Station

The President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has announced plans to build a nuclear power station in the country.

A source of nuclear energy is essential for national security, the president is reported to have said to Russia's Interfax news.

Belarus currently relies heavily on Russian gas for its energy.

The nuclear plant is expected to cost up to US$2.8m to build with work starting in 2008, according to the BBC.
