Plans For US Coal-Fired Power Plants Scrapped

18 October 2007 15:30

Proposals for coal-fired power plants are being scrapped in the US with more being delayed as energy companies face increasing pressure over global warming and rising construction costs, writes the Associated Press.

About 16 proposals have been scrapped while others have been delayed, representing enough electricity to power approximately 20 million homes.

Figures released by the US Department of Energy reveal eight projects totalling 7,000MW have been cancelled since May this year.

Environmentalists have put increasing pressure on energy utilities to shut down coal-fired plants in the US.
