Global Nuclear Output to Double by 2030

25 October 2007 15:57

The world's nuclear output could almost double by 2030 as demand increases and more power stations are built, according to a report by the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The report projects an average growth rate of up to 2.5 percent or 679GW, helping nuclear power to remain a "key energy source in the coming decades".

Electricity supplied by nuclear power ranges from 78 percent in France to just 2 percent in China, a country experiencing "huge energy growth" with increasing nuclear power needs, according to the report.

The IAEA says there are currently 435 operating nuclear reactors around the world, including 103 in the US with 29 more under construction.
