Safety Breaches Leads to Russian Radioactive Leak

30 October 2007 12:48

A radiation leak at a secret nuclear weapons and waste plant in Russia has been caused by safety breaches, according to Russian officials.

The Mayak plant, located in the Ural mountains, was leaking radioactive waste from a faulty tap onto a nearby road.

The leak, which presents no danger to humans according to officials, is a result of "severe violations of the safety rules," the local prosecutor-general's office has announced in a statement.

Nuclear weapons and nuclear waste are reprocessed at the highly secretive plant, which is about 2,000km east of Moscow.

Foreigners are denied access to the area due to sensitive work with nuclear weapons, writes Reuters.
