Turkey and Iran Agree on New Gas Deals

20 November 2007 15:03

Turkey is set to sign natural gas deals with Iran, Turkish Energy Minister Hilmi Guler has announced.

The news comes following a US$1.5bn accord for the upgrade of existing power transmission lines and construction of a new line between the two nations last week.

Under the deal, Turkey plans to import between thee and six billion kilowatt hours of electricity and envisages completion of the line within a year, writes Reuters.

The energy deals will defy US pressure on allies to avoid ties with Iran over its nuclear programme.

Iran currently exports electricity to Turkey via two transmission lines with a combined capacity of 250MW
