China Seeks Strategy For Rural Power

23 November 2007 15:10

China is looking to boost energy development in its vast rural regions with the help of the United Nations Development Program, according to report released today by Xinhua News.

A draft strategy on the nation's growing power plans could be released as early as next year, laying the ground work for a rural energy scheme which could include the provision of natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas.

The plan will aim to increase government investment in rural energy as well as upgrade oil and gas stations and maintenance services for renewable energies.

The new plan could help ten million people in China suffering from energy poverty, the report says.

At present, the people of China's rural regions rely on coal and low-efficiency biomass, such as straw or firewood, and consumed less than 100KW/h of electricity per capita in 2006.
