Internet search engine Google’s investor arm Google Inc is branching out into the renewables sector as it announces plans to invest in developing electricity from renewable energy.

The company has told IT website computerworld.com it plans to hire engineers and energy experts to head up the research and development work for the initiative, known as RE<C.

Google co-founder Larry Page was quoted as saying he hopes the company can produce cheaper renewable energy on a “globally significant” scale.

The company says it aims to produce 1GW of renewable energy capacity that is cheaper than coal.
