Italian electricity company Enel SpA has bought a stake in France's nuclear programme as part of a deal agreed with French energy giant Électricité de France (EDF) today.

The agreement, sealed during a summit in France, gives Enel a 12.5 percent stake in France's third-generation EPR pressurised water reactor being built in Flamanville, northern France.

The 1,600MW facility is expected to become operational in 2012.

Financial terms were not disclosed.
