China to Bring in Green Laws

06 December 2007 16:17

China is to introduce new energy reduction laws as part of the country's efforts to address climate change, writes Chinese news agency Xinhua.

Out of the 140 articles of the country's newly drafted energy law, 20 are believed to concern energy conservation and the development of clean and renewable energy.

The laws will require the industry to improve energy consumption structure and raise efficiency of energy use by encouraging the replacement of traditional fossil fuels with renewable and low carbon sources.

The laws are not expected to come into force until 2009 at the latest, say energy experts speaking to Xinhua.
