Emission Cuts a Possibilty at Bali Talks07 December 2007 11:46 Developing nations - including China, the world's biggest polluter - are likely to agree to cut greenhouse gas emissions as UN climate change talks in Bali move towards a new pact to fight global warming. The head of the UN Climate Change Secretariat Yvo de Boer says "binding commitments for developing countries are not off the table but are crawling towards the edge," writes Reuters. But de Boer also says most rich nations believe it is too early to expect developing nations to cap emissions. Many developing countries say they will try to brake the rise of their emissions but want incentives such as clean technology and aid. The Kyoto Protocol binds 36 industrialised nations to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, mainly from burning fossil fuels, by five percent below 1990 levels by 2008-2012. Delegates from 190 countries have gathered in Bali this week to thrash out a new global pact to fight climate change by 2009. By staff writer » Email this link to a friend |
