US Propose Laws to Boost Renewables07 December 2007 15:51 The US Democratic Party is seeking to pass a new bill designed to cut reliance on oil and boost the use of biofuels and renewable energy. The party has pushed through "the most aggressive fuel economy standards in 30 years" by revoking US$21bn in tax breaks to oil companies, writes the San Francisco Chronicle. The bill would raise the fuel economy standard, increasing the use of ethanol and other biofuels from nine billion gallons next year to 36 billion gallons by 2022. The Republican Party have dubbed the bill as the "no-energy energy bill" because it will not boost production of traditional fossil fuels used by consumers. The bill must now be passed through the Senate where it faces "major changes," writes the newspaper. By staff writer » Email this link to a friend |
