Bali Talks a "Failure"

18 December 2007 17:01

The Thai Government has slammed the Bali climate talks where delegates from 190 countries failed to agree on emissions targets to replace the existing Kyoto Protocol.

Thailand's acting Natural Resources and Environment Minister Yongyuth Yuttawong told a press conference this week the Bali summit was a "failure".

The delegates did however agree to purse the 'Bali roadmap' at first round talks in Poland next year before meeting in 2009 in Copenhagen to discuss replacing the Kyoto Protocol.

The Kyoto Protocol binds 36 industrialised nations to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, mainly from burning fossil fuels, by five percent below 1990 levels by 2008-2012.
