North Korea Misses Nuclear Declaration Deadline

02 January 2008 12:46

North Korea has missed a year-end deadline to account for its nuclear weapons under a US-led disarmament-for-aid deal.

The US says it is still possible for the North Koreans to provide a full and complete declaration, which was due on the 31 December, reports Reuters.

North Korea has so far not given any explanation for missing the deadline, stressing only economic issues in a New Year editorial.

The deal to declare all atomic activities was agreed in February 2007 with China, the US, Japan and Russia entitling Pyongyang to large amounts of aid.

North Korea has since closed its main reactor at Yongbyon and is expected to permanently disable it soon.
