UK To Join New Nuclear Generation

03 January 2008 16:51

Britain is expected to give the go-ahead to a new generation of nuclear power stations next week, sparking new deals for nuclear firms.

The decision to build the new reactors is expected on Tuesday, together with the publication of an Energy Bill to meet climate change goals by 2020.

Yesterday, politicians in the southern English county of Kent announced their backing for a controversial new coal-fired power station.

Kent's Medway Council Development Control Committee voted to raise no objection to planning permission for the construction of two coal-fired electricity-generating units at Kingsnorth, by energy giant E.ON's UK arm.

E.ON UK claims the £1bn plant would produce power efficiently and cleanly.

More than 9,000 people have objected to the plans, according to Kent news site kentnews.co.uk.

Final consent for the power station will be decided by central government.
