New Solar Company To Store Power in Molten Salt

03 January 2008 16:50

A new solar technology company - SolarReserve - plans to commercialise a solar power plant capable of generating electricity and storing it in molten salt.

The plant will use mirrors to reflect light into a holding tank full of the salt.

The heated liquid is then pumped into a steam generator that will turn a turbine to produce electricity.

The plant will be capable of generating 500MW of peak power, with the technology expected to be made available within three or four years.

The venture was created by investment firm US Renewables Group, writes technology website CNET.com.
