Scottish Hydroelectric To Power Homes

08 January 2008 12:18

Completion of Scotland's largest hydroelectric power scheme for half a century is anticipated to provide renewable electricity for thousands of homes.

Energy company Scottish and Southern Energy's plant has been designed to collect rainwater from the mountains above Loch Ness at Glendoe before being channelled through vast turbines.

When the Glendoe plant becomes operational next year it will be able to begin generating at full capacity in only 30 seconds, writes The Scotsman newspaper.

The company estimates that the operating cost of producing electricity from Glendoe will be a tenth of that of a conventional gas or coal-fired station.
