Europe Admits Problems With Biofuels Policy

15 January 2008 15:25

Europe's Environment Commissioner says problems have been caused by a policy to get ten percent of Europe's road fuels from biofuel crops.

Stavros Dimas told the BBC it would be better to miss the ten percent target than achieve it by harming the poor or damaging the environment.

"We have seen that the environmental problems caused by biofuels and also the social problems are bigger than we thought they were," Mr Dimas told the BBC.

Dimas says the EU will introduce a certification scheme for biofuels and promised a clampdown on biodiesel from palm oil, which is leading to rainforest destruction in Indonesia.
