China Power Crisis Shuts Generators

01 February 2008 14:45

Chinese power company China Resource Power Holdings has shut two generating plants after harsh weather disrupted southern China’s electricity grid.

The firm shut its Liyujiang power plant and Liyujiang B power plant in the southern province of Hunan, carrying a combined installed capacity of 1,900MW, sources in China have told Reuters.

Heavy snowfall in parts of central and southern China has blocked roads and railways and stalled thermal coal shipments.

Energy shortages have caused power blackouts across 17 provinces in the country and left millions stranded at rail stations ahead of the Chinese New Year.
