India Invests in Green Technology

07 February 2008 15:26

The Indian Government is to unveil a plan to curb the threat of global warming, as long as emissions targets do not slow economic growth, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced.

The government's Council on Climate Change will look at setting up a venture capital fund to promote green technologies to increase energy efficiency, writes Reuters.

"India is prepared to commit that our per capita carbon emissions will never exceed the average per capita emissions of developed industrial economies," Singh told a summit on sustainable development in New Delhi.

According to officials, the new national plan will not include any overall emissions targets.

India is one of the world's top polluters, but is not required to cut emissions under the Kyoto Protocol.
