The Malaysian Government has announced a 30-year development plan to turn Borneo Island's Sarawak state into an energy hub by taking advantage of its rich oil and mineral resources.

The Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy is the latest in a series of government-led plans totalling about US$325bn to create farming, energy and tourism hubs in various parts of the country, writes Reuters.

British zinc miner ZincOx Resources and Malaysian firm Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd will also invest in the region.

Rio Tinto plans to build an aluminium smelter in Borneo in addition to a second, smaller smelter to be built by the Malaysian Government.
