Eskom Invites Tenders For New Plants

15 February 2008 16:10

South African utility Eskom is inviting tenders to build power generating plants to be fully operational by June 2012, as it moves to resolve the country's massive energy shortage.

The company is inviting proposals from parties that can be operational in the short to medium-term, with output between 5MW and 1,000MW, with maximum capacity restricted to 3,000MW.

The tender is open to all technologies.

Yesterday, the company announced it would be buying an extra 45 million tonnes of coal over the next two years to boost output following the country's worst electricity shortages to date.
