China Builds New Nuclear Reactor

19 February 2008 14:49

Construction of a US$7.1bn nuclear power station in China has begun as the country continues to expand its nuclear energy resources.

The Ningde power station in Fujian province is being built on three islands in the village of Beiwan in Fuding, 143km north of Fuzhou.

The first phase of the project comprises the construction of four nuclear reactors, each with a capacity of 1,000MW, writes China Daily.

Vice Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Zhang Guobao told the newspaper the power station will significantly ease the strain on energy supply in the area while also helping with environmental protection efforts.

More nuclear stations are planned for Fujian province, boosting the 11 nuclear reactors currently operating in China with a combined capacity of 8,000MW.
