Germany Proposes New International Fuel Bank

20 February 2008 16:30

Germany has presented proposals to the UN atomic watchdog to create an international fuel bank, to meet the growing international interest in atomic energy.

In the Multilateral Enrichment Sanctuary Project (MESP) plan, countries who wish to develop nuclear technology for energy production only would be guaranteed access to nuclear fuel, Germany's ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Peter Gottwald, has announced.

Gottwald says he believes every country should have the right to decide on its own energy mix, including nuclear energy.

Germany's proposals include an International Enrichment Centre, operating under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to address questions by customers interested in using nuclear energy.
