Space-Based Solar Energy Could Come to Earth

05 March 2008 16:09

Space satellite technology could soon be used to collect solar energy for use on Earth, according to the US Defence of Department.

A study is investigating a variety of alternative energy sources, which could supply bases and troops as well as non-military users, according to sources speaking to space.com.

Although the idea of space-based solar power may threaten traditional energy industries, their expertise, particularly in energy distribution, will be valuable, according to the website.

US think-tank Marshall Institute President Jeff Kueter says it is too early to determine if space-based solar power is viable, but if successful could transform the energy industry for good.
