Indian Capital Suffers Blackouts

10 March 2008 16:39

Two 12-hour power blackouts shut factories and businesses, disrupted trains and left millions of people without power in and around New Delhi, India, over the weekend.

The outages on Friday and Sunday have been blamed on heavy fog and pollution that settled on transmission lines, tripping them when their insulation proved insufficient to handle the conditions, state-run Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation told Associated Press.

The Indian Government has ordered replacement insulators with polymer insulators to prevent collapse of the power supply in the region, the Hindustan Times newspaper reports.
