Wind is King in Blustery Ireland

11 March 2008 11:45

The Republic of Ireland's national energy agency, Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI), says the country produces enough wind power to meet all its electricity supply needs.

"There is enough onshore-accessible wind for about 100 percent of our electricity requirements," says SEI program manager for renewable-energy research Graham Brennan.

Reports show that turbines could provide 5,000MW across the republic and Northern Ireland, Brennatold told CNET News.com.

The country has installed 800MW-worth of wind turbines, with developers expected to file applications for a further 3,700MW.

The government is on track to surpass its target of 1,200MW of wind power by 2010, part of a larger aim produce between 33 and 44 percent of renewable energy by 2020.
