Solar Firm Dumping Silicon Waste in China

11 March 2008 17:08

A Chinese producer of polysilicon, used in the construction of solar panels, has been blamed for dumping toxic waste in China's eastern central Henan Province.

According to the Washington Post, Luoyang Zhonggui High-Technology has dumped enough silicon tetrachloride waste to turn fields white, with four tons created for every ton of polysilicon produced.

Even though silicon tetrachloride can be recycled, manufacturers can make polysilicon more cheaply if they ignore environmental protections, writes the paper.
