EU Climate Action Plan Due This Year

14 March 2008 10:53

EU leaders will decide on a new climate change action plan by the end of the year, according to draft conclusions laid out at a Brussels summit this week.

The plan aims to meet EU goals to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 20 percent by 2020, compared to 1990 levels.

To achieve the targets, EU states are obliged to make renewable energies the source of 20 percent of total energy consumption across the bloc by 2020.

EU member states have committed to aim for 30 percent reduction if other countries agree to match them.
