Ireland Builds World's First Commercial Tidal Turbine

01 April 2008

Ireland is to be home to the world's first commercial tidal turbine, producing energy from British tidal waters.

The 300t turbine will be fixed to the seabed by Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough, which has one of the fastest tidal flows on earth, writes UK broadcaster Channel 4 News.

The turbine is expected to generate enough electricity to power 1,000 homes.
