Eskom to Import Mozambique Electricity

09 April 2008 12:15

South African power utility Eskom has agreed a five-year deal with Mozambique to import extra electricity in a bid to contain crippling energy shortages.

Eskom plans to import an extra 250MW of power from the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric power station, the company told Reuters.

The utility has been struggling to meet electricity demands across South Africa since power shortages led to the country's mining industry shutting down for five days in January.

Mines are still only operating at 95 percent of usual capacity.
