Enel SpA Eyes Italian Nuclear Power

21 April 2008 15:26

Italy's largest power company Enel SpA plans to build a nuclear power plant in the country to take advantage of possible new laws permitting nuclear power generation, according to German press reports.

According to the Financial Times Deutschland, citing Enel Chief Executive Fulvio Conti, it could take seven to ten years for a new nuclear project to come online.

Italy banned the use of nuclear energy twenty years ago.

About 65 percent of electricity is currently generated from natural gas with 20 percent from imported power.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi advocates the reintroduction of nuclear power.
