India-based Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has successfully completed the commissioning of a 500MW thermal unit in the Indian state of West Bengal.

With this completion, BHEL has commissioned the second 500MW thermal unit at Sagardighi Thermal Power Station (TPS) Phase II project in Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

The first 500MW thermal unit of the 1,000MW coal-based power plant was commissioned by BHEL in December 2015. This coal-based project was developed by the state-owned West Bengal Power Development Corporation (WBPDCL).

"BHEL has contributed 83% of the total coal-based power generating capacity of WBPDCL."

Under the terms of the deal, BHEL will provide design, engineering, development, supply, erection, and commissioning of steam generators, steam turbine generators and auxiliaries, electrical equipment, and civil works, as well as advanced controls and instrumentation (C&I). The thermal unit was developed at the company’s manufacturing facilities at Haridwar, Hyderabad, Trichy, Bengaluru, Ranipet, and Bhopal.

Erection and commissioning of the project equipment has been carried out by BHEL’s Power sector, eastern region.

To date, BHEL has contributed 83% of the total coal-based power generating capacity of WBPDCL. Currently, the company is also working on three units of 40MW each for National Thermal Power Corporation’s (NTPC) Rammam hydroelectric project in West Bengal.
