Georgia Power has installed a steam generator at the Vogtle nuclear plant expansion near Waynesboro, Georgia.

Weighing 1.4 million pounds, the steam generator was lifted into Unit Three. This marks the first major lift carried out under a newly finalised service agreement signed between Westinghouse and Vogtle’s co-owners including Southern Company subsidiary Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power, MEAG Power, and Dalton city, reported World Nuclear News.

Project management and control at the Vogtle site has also been transferred to Southern Nuclear after Westinghouse filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in March this year.

Georgia Power noted that construction went uninterrupted following Westinghouse's bankruptcy.

As part of the ongoing expansion at Vogtle plant, Georgia Power has also placed the first of four accumulator tanks, as well as the KQ22 and KQ23 modules.

Georgia Power owns a 45.7% stake in the new Vogtle units. The company aims to conclude a comprehensive schedule, a cost-to-complete assessment, and a cancellation cost assessment for the expansion by the end of this month.
