Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) intends to award a QR4bn ($1.09bn) contract to Mitsibushi for construction of a power and water producing facility in the country.

Once operational, the facility will have a daily capacity to produce 2,400MW hydro-electric power and 130 million gallons of water.

The hydroelectric deal was awarded to the Japanese company within a week after the bid was submitted, reports Arabic daily Sharq.

QEWC general manager Fahad Al Muhannadi was quoted by the news daily as saying: "This project has entered the final stage of launching. Mitsubishi has won the contract by submitting the lowest bid and it will be awarded within a week."

"Once operational, the facility will have a daily capacity to produce 2,400MW hydro-electric power and 130 million gallons of water."

The facility will be built in the economic zone to south of the Gulf country’s capital Doha.

QEWC is also trying to negotiate a deal with the government-owned Kahramaa (Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation) to obtain a contract for a 36 million gallon water desalination plant. This will be built as a part of the expansion of Ras Abu Fontas desalination facility in south Qatar.
