Parque Eolico El Arrayan (PEEA) has started construction work on a 115MW wind project, located on the Chile coast.

Project sponsors Pattern Energy Group, AEI and Antofagasta Minerals have provided $245m to finance the El Arrayan project during its two-year construction period.

Mike Garland, Pattern Energy CEO, saidL "Chile's limited indigenous energy resources make it an ideal locale for renewable projects.

"El Arrayan will make use of strong coastal winds to deliver renewable energy into the central SIC power grid.

"The project will provide the largest contribution of renewable energy toward meeting Chile's goal of generating 20% of its energy from non-conventional renewable sources by 2020."

The El Arrayan Wind project will utilise 50 units of Siemens' 2.3MW wind turbines and will generate clean energy for 200,000 local households every year.

PEEA expects to start operations on the wind farm in early 2014.
