Siemens has secured a contract from Canadian engineering and construction company Burns & McDonnell for delivery of components to be installed at SaskPower's planned Chinook Power Station.

The station is a 350MW natural gas-fired power plant, which will be located near Swift Current, Saskatchewan.

Siemens' power and gas North America senior vice-president of sales John Gibson said: "We are pleased to supply our industry-leading turbines, generators and electrical equipment for this modern power infrastructure project.

"We are pleased to supply our industry-leading turbines, generators and electrical equipment for this modern power infrastructure project."

"Harnessing cleaner-burning and affordable natural gas, this fuel-efficient facility will deliver reliable power, while also helping to reduce emissions. We look forward to continuing to use our innovation to help grow Canada's thermal power market."

The new power plant is expected to be in operation by Q4, 2019. It will have the capacity to produce power sufficient for about 300,000 homes.

As part of the contract, Siemens will supply one SGT6-5000F gas turbine, one SST-900 steam turbine, a SGen6-1000A generator, and one SGen6-100A generator. The combined cycle facility will be integrated with Siemens' gas and steam turbines, which will enable efficient utilisation of the fuel consumed by the power plant.

The task can be accomplished by utilising the exhaust heat from the gas turbine to generate steam to further power the  turbine, which would improve overall power-plant efficiency.
