Aggreko Loadbanks has successfully completed a demanding three-month regime of tests on the Qorlortorsuaq hydro-power plant in Greenland. The plant provides vital mains power for its two neighbouring towns, Qaqortoq and Narsaq, and to ensure its 100 per cent performance, the customer, Energiekonsortiert, chose Aggreko, the world leader in the provision of power, temperature control and oil-free air systems.

Aggreko offers an unrivalled testing regime including specialist engineering design services, technical advice, 24-hour service support and full project management on anything from small low- voltage tests to multi-MVA high-voltage applications. It also provides additional features such as data acquisition, variable power factor control, automatic test programme capability and remote control.

Gene Murrell, Loadbank and Offshore Manager explained, 'Regular testing of all types of power systems, large or small, is vital. For power plants, the social and financial implications of a prolonged power outage can be huge. Aggreko’s loadbank rental is a risk-free way of ensuring peace of mind and equipment performance in turbine and diesel generators, frequency converters, electrical distribution panels and systems, UPS systems, battery discharge rectifiers, standby battery systems and D.C. power supplies.’

The tests at Qorlortorsuaq – 9.3MVA at 6.3kV and 50Hz – required high levels of expertise and specialist equipment. The transformer and loadbank package was configured to allow the power system to be fully tested for compliance to manufacturers’ and international standards.

Aggreko offers a full range of AC loadbanks from 600kW 'resistive only’ to 6000kVA combined 'resistive and reactive’ (inductive) in single units. These units can be paralleled together to provide larger load capacity. For the Qorlortorsuaq project Aggreko supplied two 5MVA loadbanks and two 6.3MVA multi-tap transformers which are fitted with high-voltage switchgear and protection as standard.

Karsten Pedersen of Energiekonsortiert was impressed with the performance both of the equipment and of the Aggreko staff on the ground. 'The project ran well from beginning to end,’ he said.
