The landfill gas plant in Malatya, Turkey, which went into operation in October 2013, was completed by Doğu Star in cooperation with Iltekno, MWM’s Turkish sales and service partner.
A MWM TCG 2020 V12 genset will use the greenhouse gases created at the landfill through bacteriological and chemical decomposition processes for producing electrical power. At Malatya’s LFG power plant, the TCG 2020 will generate approximately 1.2MW, which is to be fed into the regional power grid between Elaziğ and Malatya. This will result in more than 1,200 households being supplied continuously with electric power.
Doğu Star CEO Osman Nuri Vardı said: "Although this investment project, involving installed power output of 1.2MW, is rather small, it is in fact of great significance to our country, our region and Malatya."
Each year, Turkey’s energy imports reach just under $60bn, and there are plans to reduce this financial burden in the future.
The level of natural gas imports was approximately 55% of all power generation five to ten years ago, but that figure has already dropped to 44%.
However, Turkey’s current investment programme for expanding power generation from domestic and renewable resources is currently underway on plants with a total capacity of 100MW.
Regional areas of focus currently include Ankara and Istanbul, although projects like the one in Malatya are being planned in all Turkish cities and are to be completed as soon as possible. The current percentage of electricity produced with landfill gas is 1.3% of overall power generation in Turkey.
