Asia-Pacific electricity procurement contracts activity up 37% in Q1 2021

There were 71 electricity procurement contracts announced in the Asia-Pacific region in Q1 2021, marking a rise of 37% over the last four-quarter average of 52, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Power Plant stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the Asia-Pacific region in Q1 2021 with 157 contracts and a 44.4% share, followed by Generation Equipment with 80 contracts and a 22.6% share and Electricity Procurement with 71 contracts and a 20.1% share during the quarter.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 53 contracts and a 74.6% share
  2. Project Implementation: 13 contracts and an 18.3% share
  3. Electricity Supply: five contracts and a 7% share.

Solar is top technology for Asia-Pacific electricity procurement contracts in Q1 2021

Looking at electricity procurement contracts by the type of technology in the Asia-Pacific region, solar accounted for 57 contracts with a 78.1% share, followed by thermal with seven contracts and a 9.6% share and wind with seven contracts and a 9.6% share.

The top issuers of electricity procurement contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Manila Electric (Philippines): 1,800MW from two contracts
  2. Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Thailand): 1,730MW from two contracts
  3. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 1,200MW capacity from four contracts.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Korea Gas (South Korea), Korea Western Power (South Korea) and TPI Polene Power (Thailand): 1,700MW from one contract
  2. San Miguel (Philippines): 1,200MW from one contract
  3. Aksa Enerji Uretim (Turkey): 740MW capacity from two contracts.
