Power industry contracts in Asia-Pacific for February 2020 down 35%

Asia-Pacific power industry contracts activity in February 2020 saw 49 contracts announced, marking a drop of 35% over the last 12-month average of 75, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Asia-Pacific power industry contracts in February 2020: India leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, India led the activity in February 2020 with 13 contracts and a share of 26.5%, down 5.2% over the previous month and down 43% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Japan with ten contracts and a share of 20.4% and Taiwan with four contracts and a share of 8.2% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, India held the top spot with 23 contracts, followed by China with nine and Australia with seven contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in February 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 14 contracts and a 35% share, followed by wind with ten contracts and a 25% share and thermal with six contracts and a 15% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Asia-Pacific as tracked by GlobalData, Generation Equipment was the most popular segment in February 2020, with 20 contracts, followed by Power Plant (13) and Electricity Procurement (8).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 21 contracts and a 42.9% share
  2. Project Implementation: 13 contracts and a 26.5% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: six contracts and a 12.2% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: four contracts and an 8.2% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: three contracts and a 6.1% share
  6. Electricity Supply: two contracts and a 4.1% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Rajasthan Solarpark Development (India): 925MW from one contract
  2. Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution (India): 440.64MW from one contract
  3. Tohoku Electric Power (Japan): 140MW capacity from one contract.

  1. NTPC (India): 925MW from one contract
  2. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 540.64MW from two contracts
