Power industry contracts in Asia-Pacific for May 2020 down 29%

Asia-Pacific power industry contracts activity in May 2020 saw 57 contracts announced, marking a drop of 29% over the last 12-month average of 80, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Asia-Pacific power industry contracts in May 2020: China leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, China led the activity in May 2020 with 12 contracts and a share of 21.1%, down 6.5% over the previous month and up 9% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Australia with ten contracts and a share of 17.5% and India with seven contracts and a share of 12.3% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, India held the top spot with 22 contracts, followed by China with 11 and Australia with six contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in May 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 22 contracts and a 39.3% share, followed by wind with 18 contracts and a 32.1% share and thermal with six contracts and a 10.7% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Asia-Pacific as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in May 2020, with 26 contracts, followed by Generation Equipment (18) and Electricity Procurement (11).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 23 contracts and a 40.4% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 18 contracts and a 31.6% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: nine contracts and a 15.8% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: five contracts and an 8.8% share
  5. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 1.8% share
  6. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: one contract and a 1.8% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. MP Power Management (India): 1,320MW from one contract
  2. PT Indonesia Dafeng Heshun Energy Industri: 1,200MW from one contract
  3. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 400MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Pench Thermal Energy (MP) (India): 1,320MW from one contract
