Power industry contracts in Asia-Pacific for May 2021 down 36%

Asia-Pacific power industry contracts activity in May 2021 saw 68 contracts announced, marking a drop of 36% over the last 12-month average of 106, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Asia-Pacific power industry contracts in May 2021: China leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, China led the activity in May 2021 with 18 contracts and a share of 26.5%, down 9.1% over the previous month and down 22% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by India with 11 contracts and a share of 16.2% and Australia with six contracts and a share of 8.8% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, China held the top spot with 23 contracts, followed by India with 19 and Australia with 11 contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in May 2021

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 32 contracts and a 50.8% share, followed by wind with 17 contracts and a 27% share and thermal with six contracts and a 9.5% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Asia-Pacific as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in May 2021, with 37 contracts, followed by Generation Equipment (21) and Electricity Procurement (11).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 24 contracts and a 35.3% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 19 contracts and a 27.9% share
  3. Consulting & Similar Services: 11 contracts and a 16.2% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: ten contracts and a 14.7% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: four contracts and a 5.9% share.

Power contracts in May 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. State Power Investment (China): 7,200MW from one contract
  2. Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan): 1,940MW from two contracts
  3. Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Pakistan): 1,530MW capacity from one contract.

Power contracts in May 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Jolywood (Taizhou) Solar Technology (China): 7,200MW from one contract
  2. Power Construction Corporation of China (China): 1,530MW from one contract
  3. ACWA Power International (Saudi Arabia): 1,500MW capacity from one contract.
