Power industry contracts in Asia-Pacific for Q1 2020 up 3%
Oil and gas companies are making moves into the UK energy market.

Asia-Pacific power industry contracts activity in Q1 2020 saw 237 contracts announced, marking a rise of 3% over the last four-quarter average of 230, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Asia-Pacific power industry contracts in Q1 2020: India leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, India led the activity in Q1 2020 with 57 contracts and a share of 24.1%, up 3% over the previous quarter and down 22% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by China with 37 contracts and a share of 15.6% and Japan with 31 contracts and a share of 13.1% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, India held the top spot with 73 contracts, followed by China with 29 and Australia with 23 contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in Q1 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 100 contracts and a 46.3% share, followed by wind with 53 contracts and a 24.5% share and thermal with 27 contracts and a 12.5% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in Asia-Pacific power contracts activity during Q1 2020, with 91 contracts, followed by Generation Equipment (76) and Electricity Procurement (45).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 89 contracts and a 37.6% share
  2. Project Implementation: 83 contracts and a 35% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 41 contracts and a 17.3% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 13 contracts and a 5.5% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: seven contracts and a 3% share
  6. Electricity Supply: four contracts and a 1.7% share.

Power contracts in Q1 2020: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 2,400MW from six contracts
  2. JERA (Japan): 1,950MW from one contract
  3. Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan): 1,500MW capacity from one contract.

Power contracts in Q1 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Mitsubishi Electric (Japan) and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (Japan): 1,950MW from one contract
  2. ACWA Power International (Saudi Arabia): 1,500MW from one contract
  3. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 1,190.64MW capacity from four contracts.
