Asia-Pacific power plant contracts activity down 24% in January 2020

There were 25 power plant contracts announced in the Asia-Pacific region in January 2020, marking a drop of 24% over the last 12-month average of 33, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Power Plant stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the Asia-Pacific region in January 2020 with 25 contracts and a 43.9% share, followed by Electricity Procurement with 16 contracts and a 28.1% share and Generation Equipment with ten contracts and a 17.5% share during the month.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 19 contracts and a 76% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: four contracts and a 16% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: two contracts and an 8% share.

Solar is top technology for Asia-Pacific power plant contracts in January 2020

Looking at power plant contracts by the type of technology in the Asia-Pacific region, solar accounted for 13 contracts with a 52% share, followed by biopower with six contracts and a 24% share and thermal with four contracts and a 16% share.

Asia-Pacific power plant contracts in January 2020: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of power plant contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan: 400MW from one contract
  2. NTPC (India): 250MW from one contract
  3. Mahagenco (India): 184MW capacity from one contract.
