Asia-Pacific power plant contracts activity down 3% in Q2 2020

There were 98 power plant contracts announced in the Asia-Pacific region in Q2 2020, marking a drop of 3% over the last 12-month average of 101, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Power Plant stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the Asia-Pacific region in Q2 2020 with 98 contracts and a 37.8% share, followed by Generation Equipment with 94 contracts and a 36.3% share and Electricity Procurement with 31 contracts and a 12% share during the quarter.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 77 contracts and a 78.6% share
  2. Consulting & Similar Services: 14 contracts and a 14.3% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: four contracts and a 4.1% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: three contracts and a 3.1% share.

Solar is top technology for Asia-Pacific power plant contracts in Q2 2020

Looking at power plant contracts by the type of technology in the Asia-Pacific region, solar accounted for 54 contracts with a 53.5% share, followed by wind with 17 contracts and a 16.8% share and hydro with ten contracts and a 9.9% share.

The top issuers of power plant contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 10,400MW from nine contracts
  2. NHPC (India): 2,000MW from five contracts
  3. Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan): 1,740MW capacity from two contracts.
