Electricity procurement contracts down 30% in May 2021

Electricity procurement contracts in May 2021 saw 63 contracts announced, marking a drop of 30% over the last 12-month average of 90, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 56 contracts and an 88.9% share
  2. Electricity Supply: six contracts and a 9.5% share
  3. Project Implementation: one contract and a 1.6% share.

Europe leads electricity procurement activity in May 2021

Comparing contracts activity in electricity procurement segment in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 24 contracts and a share of 38.1% during May 2021, followed by North America with 19 contracts and a 30.2% share and Asia-Pacific with 11 contracts and a 17.5% share.

Solar is leading technology for electricity procurement contracts in May 2021

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 40 contracts with a 57.1% share, followed by wind with 26 contracts and a 37.1% share and hydro with two contracts and a 2.9% share.

The top issuers of electricity procurement contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Urzad Regulacji Energetyki (Poland): 1,440MW from one contract
  2. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 540MW from one contract
  3. AEP Energy (United States): 480MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Equinor (Norway) and Polenergia (Poland): 1,440MW from one contract
  2. JSW Energy (India): 540MW from one contract
  3. Global Energy Generation L (United States): 480MW capacity from one contract.
