Power industry contracts in Europe for Q4 2020 down 22%

Europe power industry contracts activity in Q4 2020 saw 387 contracts announced, marking a drop of 22% over the last four-quarter average of 493, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Europe power industry contracts in Q4 2020: The UK leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the UK led the activity in Q4 2020 with 61 contracts and a share of 15.8%, up 2.7% over the previous quarter and up 24% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by Germany with 36 contracts and a share of 9.3% and France with 34 contracts and a share of 8.8% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, France held the top spot with 97 contracts, followed by the UK with 49 and Germany with 35 contracts.

Wind is top technology area for contracts in Q4 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, wind accounted for the largest proportion with 137 contracts and a 50.2% share, followed by solar with 60 contracts and a 22% share and thermal with 23 contracts and an 8.4% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Generation Equipment was the most popular segment in Europe power contracts activity during Q4 2020, with 125 contracts, followed by T&D Equipment (85) and Power Plant (77).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 221 contracts and a 57.1% share
  2. Project Implementation: 58 contracts and a 15% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 45 contracts and an 11.6% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 33 contracts and an 8.5% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 24 contracts and a 6.2% share
  6. Electricity Supply: four contracts and a 1% share
  7. Others: two contracts and a 0.5% share.

Power contracts in Q4 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Europe were:

  1. Orsted (Denmark): 1,285MW from two contracts
  2. Wind Farm L (Ukraine): 800MW from one contract
  3. Amazon Web Services (United States): 735MW capacity from five contracts.

Power contracts in Q4 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Europe were:

  1. Doggerbank Offshore Wind Farm Project one Projco (United Kingdom) and Doggerbank Offshore Wind Farm Project two Projco (United Kingdom): 1,920MW from three contracts
  2. Power Construction Corporation of China (China): 800MW from one contract
  3. BP (United Kingdom): 404MW capacity from two contracts.
