Europe power plant contracts activity down 26% in Q1 2020
Oil and gas companies are making moves into the UK energy market.

There were 131 power plant contracts announced in the Europe region in Q1 2020, marking a drop of 26% over the last 12-month average of 178, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Power Plant stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the Europe region in Q1 2020 with 131 contracts and a 36.6% share, followed by Generation Equipment with 84 contracts and a 23.5% share and Electricity Procurement with 43 contracts and a 12% share during the quarter.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 114 contracts and an 87% share
  2. Consulting & Similar Services: 11 contracts and an 8.4% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: five contracts and a 3.8% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: one contract and a 0.8% share.

Solar is top technology for Europe power plant contracts in Q1 2020

Looking at power plant contracts by the type of technology in the Europe region, solar accounted for 75 contracts with a 57.3% share, followed by wind with 38 contracts and a 29% share and nuclear with eight contracts and a 6.1% share.

Europe power plant contracts in Q1 2020: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of power plant contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Europe were:

  1. PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna (Poland): 1,400MW from one contract
  2. AzerEnerji JS (Azerbaijan): 1,000MW from one contract
  3. Gestore dei Servizi Energetici – GSE (Italy) and Solarcentury Holdings (United Kingdom): 500MW capacity from two contracts.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Europe were:

  1. Ansaldo Energia (Italy): 1,430MW from two contracts
  2. GE Power (United States) and Polimex Mostostal (Poland): 1,400MW from one contract
  3. China Gezhouba Group International Engineering (China): 1,000MW capacity from one contract.
