Power industry contracts in Middle East and Africa for December 2020 down 13%

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts activity in December 2020 saw 26 contracts announced, marking a drop of 13% over the last 12-month average of 30, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts in December 2020: Egypt leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, Egypt led the activity in December 2020 with five contracts and a share of 19.2%, up 2.5% over the previous month and up 150% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Saudi Arabia with five contracts and a share of 19.2% and Mozambique with four contracts and a share of 15.4% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, Saudi Arabia held the top spot with four contracts, followed by Iran with three and Egypt with two contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in December 2020

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with nine contracts and a 56.3% share, followed by thermal with five contracts and a 31.3% share and hydro with two contracts and a 12.5% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in December 2020, with eight contracts, followed by T&D Project (7) and Electricity Procurement (4).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

1. Project Implementation: 15 contracts and a 57.7% share
2. Supply & Erection: six contracts and a 23.1% share
3. Power Purchase Agreement: four contracts and a 15.4% share
4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: one contract and a 3.8% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

1. AlDhahir Group (Jordan): 1,000MW from one contract
2. Electricidade De Mozambique EP (Mozambique): 450MW from one contract
3. ACWA Power International (Saudi Arabia): 200MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

1. Power Construction Corporation of China (China): 1,000MW from one contract
2. Sterling and Wilson Solar (India): 200MW from one contract
3. VINCI Construction Grands Projets (France): 128MW capacity from one contract.
